HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo image format introduced by Apple in iOS 11. It uses High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression to store ultra high-quality camera images at approximately half the file size of traditional JPEGs.

What is a .HEIC File? (Technical Definition & Architecture)
HEIC is an advanced ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) container designed to store digital photos, image bursts, auxiliary depth maps, and alpha channels using High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC / H.265) intra-frame compression. Adopted by Apple in 2017 as the default photo format for iPhone cameras, HEIC solves the storage and bandwidth bottlenecks of modern ultra-high-resolution sensors.
Uses variable Coding Tree Units (CTUs) from 4x4 to 64x64 pixels for dynamic detail optimization.
Supports over 281 trillion color values, eliminating color banding in sky and skin gradients.
Stores lossless or lossy alpha transparency channels directly inside the image container.
ISO/IEC 23008-12 Container Architecture & Box Hierarchy
Unlike JPEG which is a flat stream of 8x8 DCT blocks, HEIC is a structured hierarchical container. It organizes data into ISOBMFF "boxes": ftyp (brand definition), meta (item references, EXIF tags, and color profiles), and mdat (raw HEVC encoded NAL units).
- ftyp Box: Header containing FourCC code "heic" or "mif1" identifying codec capabilities.
- meta Box: Stores item location (iloc), item protection (ipro), and color profile atoms.
- mdat Box: Contains the compressed NAL packets containing high-frequency and low-frequency image coefficients.
- Non-Destructive Transform Metadata: Rotations, crops, and overlays can be applied as metadata instructions without re-encoding the underlying pixels.
How to Open .HEIC Files on Windows, Mac & Android
- 1Install Microsoft Store Extensions: Search and install "HEIF Image Extensions" (free) and "HEVC Video Extensions" in the Microsoft Store.
- 2Use Free CopyTrans HEIC: Download CopyTrans HEIC for Windows to enable native thumbnail previews and printing in File Explorer.
- 3Third-Party Viewers: Open instantly with IrfanView, XnView MP, or Adobe Photoshop.
- 1Native Double Click: Double-click the file to open natively in Apple Preview or Apple Photos (macOS 10.13+).
- 2Quick Look: Highlight the .heic file in Finder and press the Spacebar for instant full-screen preview.
- 3iOS Camera Setting: Go to Settings > Camera > Formats to toggle between "High Efficiency" (HEIC) and "Most Compatible" (JPEG).
- 1Google Photos: Tap any .heic photo in Google Photos on Android 9+ for hardware-accelerated playback.
- 2Samsung Galaxy Gallery: Supported natively in Samsung Gallery on Galaxy S10 / Note 10 and newer devices.
- 3Samsung Camera Toggle: In Camera Settings, open "Advanced picture options" to toggle "High efficiency pictures".
Convert .HEIC Files Online & Free
Convert your iPhone HEIC photos into standard JPEG format for 100% universal compatibility across older Windows PCs, web browsers, print shops, and social media platforms.
Package single or multiple HEIC photos, invoice scans, and receipts into a formatted, printable PDF document without compromising photo clarity.
.HEIC MIME Types & HTTP Server Headers
When serving .heic files over HTTP or configuring REST APIs, web servers must send the official IANA registered Content-Type headers:
| MIME Type Identifier | Standard Usage | File Extensions | Copy |
|---|---|---|---|
| image/heic | Single still image encoded with HEVC | .heic | |
| image/heif | Generic High Efficiency Image File container | .heif, .hif | |
| image/heic-sequence | Image sequence, photo burst, or Apple Live Photo | .heics, .heic |
# Nginx mime.types
