How to Open a .PSD File

A .PSD file is a Adobe Photoshop Document. PSD files are Adobe Photoshop native layered documents containing complex layer masks, raster channels, vector paths, and blend modes. Standard image viewers only display the flattened composite image or fail to open unrasterized smart objects.

Windows 11 & 10 Instructions

  1. Double-Click in Windows File Explorer: Locate your .PSD file and double-click. Windows 11/10 will attempt to open it with Windows Photos / File Viewer.
  2. Use "Open With" Menu: Right-click the .PSD file → select 'Open with' → click 'Choose another app'. Select your preferred graphics editor or viewer.
  3. Set as Default Application: Check the box 'Always use this app to open .PSD files' to create a permanent system file association.

macOS Instructions

  1. Instant Quick Look (Spacebar): Select the .PSD file in Finder and tap the Spacebar on your keyboard for an instant floating preview.
  2. Open with Apple Native App: Double-click the file to launch in Apple Preview / Quick Look.
  3. Set Permanent macOS Association: Select the file in Finder → press Cmd + I (Get Info) → expand 'Open with:' → choose your preferred app → click 'Change All...'.
