How to Open a .MID File

A .MID file is a MID File Format. Opening a .MID file requires software capable of decoding the MID File Format format. If your operating system lacks a registered viewer or native codec, the file cannot be previewed without additional tools.

Windows 11 & 10 Instructions

  1. Open with VLC Media Player (Universal): Download free open-source VLC Media Player. Right-click the .MID file → select 'Open with' → 'VLC media player'.
  2. Try Windows Media Player / Films & TV: Double-click to open in Windows default player. If prompted with 'Codec Missing', install the K-Lite Codec Pack Standard.

macOS Instructions

  1. Instant Quick Look (Spacebar): Select the .MID file in Finder and tap the Spacebar on your keyboard for an instant floating preview.
  2. Open with Apple Native App: Double-click the file to launch in Apple Preview / Quick Look.
  3. Set Permanent macOS Association: Select the file in Finder → press Cmd + I (Get Info) → expand 'Open with:' → choose your preferred app → click 'Change All...'.
