How to Open a .HEIF File
A .HEIF file is a HEIF File Format. Opening a .HEIF file requires software capable of decoding the HEIF File Format format. If your operating system lacks a registered viewer or native codec, the file cannot be previewed without additional tools.
Windows 11 & 10 Instructions
- Install HEIF Codec from Microsoft Store: Open the Microsoft Store app and search for "HEIF Image Extensions" (free from Microsoft Corporation) and install it to enable native thumbnail previews.
- Double-Click in File Explorer: Once the codec is installed, double-click your .HEIC photo to view in the Windows Photos app.
- Alternative: Open with IrfanView or AnyFileX: Install free IrfanView with all plugins, or drag the file into the AnyFileX in-browser viewer above.
macOS Instructions
- Instant Quick Look (Spacebar): Select the .HEIF file in Finder and tap the Spacebar on your keyboard for an instant floating preview.
- Open with Apple Native App: Double-click the file to launch in Apple Preview / Quick Look.
- Set Permanent macOS Association: Select the file in Finder → press Cmd + I (Get Info) → expand 'Open with:' → choose your preferred app → click 'Change All...'.
