How to Open a .DMG File

A .DMG file is a DMG File Format. DMG files are Apple Disk Image containers formatted in HFS+ or APFS filesystem structures. Windows and Linux operating systems cannot mount DMG files as virtual disks natively without third-party extraction tools or virtual machine software.

Windows 11 & 10 Instructions

  1. Native Windows 11 Extraction: Windows 11 includes native libarchive support. Right-click the .DMG archive → click 'Extract All...' → select destination folder.
  2. Use 7-Zip or WinRAR (Recommended for Encrypted / Multi-Part): Download free open-source 7-Zip. Right-click the .DMG file → select '7-Zip' → 'Extract to "...\"'.
  3. Inspect Archive in AnyFileX Browser Viewer: Drop the .DMG into AnyFileX to view individual file entries without extracting to disk.

macOS Instructions

  1. Double-Click to Mount Virtual Disk Image: Double-click the .DMG file in Finder. macOS DiskImageMounter will verify the checksum and mount a new virtual drive on your Desktop.
  2. Install or Copy Contents: Open the mounted virtual volume, drag the application icon to your /Applications folder, then Eject the disk image.
