TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) was created by Aldus (now Adobe) in 1986 as the premier multi-layer, uncompressed archival standard for scanning, professional desktop publishing, and commercial print. PNG was created in 1996 as an open-source, patent-free replacement for GIF specifically optimized for screen displays and web transmission.
